Being an Influencer

Good Morning! I hope you all had a great weekend.

I have something on my heart this morning that I wanted to share with you all.

I’ve been frustrated lately with social media. It seems like everyone lately does things just to “post” about it.

Or you can’t even scroll anymore without someone trying to sell something to you or offer you a discount code on a product.

Or how about those accounts you follow that want to be a “big time” influencer but then they get on IG the next day saying they don’t know if they can keep up with the demands of IG or if it’s for them. But then the very next day they are back to doing a made up project on their house just for something to talk about??

I don’t know. I’ve really been convicted lately on how I am spending my time. Maybe it’s because I am more aware of how quickly time goes with the girls or how wonderful it is to truly sit down without your phone and have a conversation with your spouse or friend, etc.

All of this got me thinking about people we follow on IG that are “influencers”. So many times these people are idolized because they have a huge following, have all the tricks and tips with products, go on cool vacations, have beautiful homes, door dash Diet Cokes to their house every hour, and the list goes on and on.

But are they truly happy? Do they have great relationships with people? A relationship with God? Are they influencing us to be good humans or just to buy more crap?

In my mind, “normal” people like me and you are more of an influencer in this world than some of those “famous” IG people.

Influence means to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something.

I have the pleasure of influencing many people in my day to day life.

I influence 180 eighth graders every day as their math teacher.

I influence 26 middle school girls as their volleyball coach.

I influence my 2 daughters daily also.

How I handle situations, how I react to things, how my attitude is~ all of these are ways to influence people in my life.

Not by how I dress or telling them where I got my shoes from, or telling them what I made for supper, or what type of soap I bought at Target that day.

My goal is to influence them to love people and have an intimate relationship with God. I hope they see His light shining in me brightly every day.

I challenge you to be a great influencer in your day to day life, no matter how “popular” you are on social media!

Hope you have a great Monday!

  1. I don’t even “do” social media- for several of the reasons you’ve mentioned! I much prefer to spend my time with friends and family or reading blogs of people like you that feel more real.

  2. I completely agree. I feel like most people on IG are trying to sell something and only posting “stylized” pictures. I miss the days when everyone just posted pics of their everyday life. I have taken all social media off my phone for lent, and I am loving the extra time in my day. I still look at IG and FB occasionally on the computer, but the temptation to scroll is not as great. Thanks for this post.

    1. I am going to do this starting in April until the end of summer I believe. Scrolling is too bad of a habit and waste of time. Way too many posed pictures too, completely agree! I like the real and down to earth ones.
