Life Lately

Life Lately

Y’all. I don’t even know where to start.

This past week was hard! And the reason why I was silent here on my little piece of the Internet.

Last Monday (my birthday) Elizabeth came to my classroom 4th hour saying she just didn’t feel very good at all.

Being the loving mom I am, I told her she was probably just hungry and to go to lunch and she’d be fine.

Well, 6th hour she came back to my room and she looked ROUGH. I immediately knew she wasn’t messing around and didn’t feel well at all.

I had her go down to the nurse because she felt hot to me and sure enough, she had a fever.

Chris took off and took her home and made an appointment at her pediatrician’s office for 3:45 that afternoon.

In my momma heart, I knew it was probably strep because she was complaining of a sore throat the day before and that’s really the only time she ever runs a fever.

Because of the lovely thing called COVID, her doctor’s office wouldn’t do a strep test on her! They would only do a COVID test on her because she had two of the COVID symptoms.

So sweet Liz had to get tested for COVID. This was NOT a pleasant experience for her! My heart broke for her.

We were told it would take a few days to get the results and she needed to stay home until we knew the results.

But me and Chris and Emily could go back to school/work even though we had close contact with her. This made ZERO sense to me!

Anyways, there was no way I was leaving Elizabeth by herself! She’s a type 1 diabetic and her fever was making her sugars go CRAZY!

I stayed home with her Tuesday and Wednesday. After Tuesday morning, her fever broke and she felt much better. She was just really congested and sniffly.

We were hoping we would have her results by Wednesday, but we still didn’t know anything by the end of the day. We were getting antsy waiting!

I decided to work Thursday because I had burned through two of my days already and Elizabeth was feeling much better. We also knew her Papa would be in town in case anything happened.

We got word first thing Thursday morning though that she was negative for COVID!

We were so relieved!! But then I was mad because I knew she sat at home with a high fever for a few days and most likely had strep! If they would’ve just tested her for strep and given her antibiotics Monday, she would’ve been better quicker.

News flash: Not everything is COVID these days! Geez!

So Thursday I finally feel normal again by going to work and I was able to catch up on so much that I missed the days I was out with Liz.

Liz was going to be able to go back to school Friday (72 hour fever free is our school rule) and all was right in the world.

WRONG!!!

Friday morning around 4:00 in the morning I woke up to the loudest thud and boom sound! I rolled over in the bed to wake Chris only to realize he wasn’t there.

Then I immediately hear Chris moaning and groaning so loud. I ran into the kitchen to find him laying on the kitchen floor near our island.

Needless to say, my heart sank! I was so scared!

He was awake and talking with me and I knew he wasn’t in any immediate danger.

He obviously had passed out while trying to get some medicine out of the cabinet and a glass of water because there was medicine everywhere!

He couldn’t remember much except for getting up to get some water, getting really hot, and then that’s it.

When Chris passed out, he fell and hit his head on our kitchen island. He had the biggest knot on the back of his head!

The girls both sleep downstairs and Elizabeth texted asking what the noise was, but Emily never heard anything.

I told Elizabeth everything was fine and to go back to bed.

I didn’t want to scare the girls!

Chris acted really, really weird after his fall!

I was able to get him up to the couch, but he kept asking me the same questions over and over.

Then he was laughing at stuff I said and at one point he was crying because he just couldn’t understand where the girls were (at 5:30 in the morning)!

I knew he probably had a concussion but I was concerned there might be something else wrong.

I made him go to the bedroom while the girls were getting up and around for school. (Again, I didn’t want to worry the girls)

I dropped the girls off at school and immediately took Chris to the ER.

When it comes to head injuries I didn’t want to mess around with anything. I’d much rather be safe than sorry. I was so worried about a brain bleed or something like that!

We were at the ER all morning. They did a cat scan of his brain and neck, an EKG, and blood work.

Every test came back perfect! Praise the Lord!

The doctor said that Chris just had an episode of vasovagal syncope most likely due to low blood pressure. And hopefully he wouldn’t have another episode. But if he did, he’d have to go see a cardiologist.

They almost acted like it was “normal” for someone to pass out and it’s our body’s way of telling us to reset. But to me, no healthy man or woman should pass out and hit their head!

I’m just so thankful all the tests came back great and Chris is feeling much better.

I feel like I’ve been living in a twilight zone.

Just starting school and being a teacher right now is hard enough, but then you throw last week at me, and I was exhausted!

I’m so glad we had a long weekend this past weekend to relax. I caught up on almost everything and feel ready for a new week!

It has to be better than last week!

I pray you have a blessed week! I plan to blog regularly this week, so come back tomorrow!

  1. Oh my goodness; what a week!! Maybe Chris was having different symptoms of a sort from whatever Elizabeth had?? Let’s just hope it is a one time fluky thing!!

  2. OMG. I can’t imagine how hard this all must have been! I don’t understand the refusal for a strep test. This has been happening since the beginning of covid – why not test for strep too so if it’s positive the patient can get antibiotics! It makes me mad! As for Chris, I hope it doesn’t happen again – I get dizzy sometimes when I stand up too fast and it’s pretty scary!

  3. Whew, what a week! All of it is so strange, but I really can’t believe they wouldn’t test E in order to give her antibiotics?!?! And then send all of you back to school. There is so much about this pandemic that just makes zero sense. I’m glad all were ok and you got some rest this weekend!

    1. Zero sense! Since we didn’t know her test results, we were “safe” to go to school. I really wish they would’ve tested her for strep first, then Covid last! We will find a place that will do it if needed in the future. Hope your week is good!

  4. Oh gosh, friend, I am so glad everything is okay now! What a week for you!!!! I am with you… not everything is COVID, so we need to move on and they should have trusted your mama gut and tested strep, ESPECIALLY in a child with Type 1 Diabetes!!!!! Give her a big hug! So glad Chris is doing fine… whew! Praying this week is so much less eventful for your household.
