Hi, friends! Hope you are finding yourself having a great Tuesday when you read this.
November is National Diabetes Awareness month.
I plan to do a blog post each week this month about Type 1 Diabetes to help raise awareness.
For those that are new to my blog, our oldest daughter, Elizabeth, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes last December. Read a blog post about that here.
The crazy thing is she was diagnosed 2 months after my youngest nephew, Zach, was diagnosed! Crazy, right?!?!
We had no previous family history of Type 1 before they were diagnosed. So I have two loved ones near and dear to my heart with this awful disease.
This is truly a silent disease that not a lot of people think about unless you live with it daily.
My goal with this blog post today is to raise awareness of the symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes.
If it wasn’t for my nephew getting diagnosed right before Elizabeth, I probably would’ve missed some of the warning signs of T1D with Liz.
Here are the main symptoms with Type 1 Diabetes:
With our Liz, I first noticed her extreme thirst and constant peeing. We couldn’t even drive 20 minutes down the road without her having to stop to go to the bathroom!
I knew in my gut something was wrong!
If you see any of these signs in your child/teenager, please don’t hesitate to ask your doctor for a simple finger stick to check blood sugar.
It could save their life!!!
I wish all doctors would do a blood sugar test for EVERY kid at EVERY doctor visit.
Thank you for letting me share my heart with you all. I know to some this may not seem like a big deal, but I was in the same situation right before my nephew and Liz were diagnosed.
Now, this is a BIG deal in my life.
Have a great Tuesday!
~Jen
I am so interested in these weekly posts so I can learn more. I have already learned so much from you on this topic. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom!
I love raising awareness for what we live with daily. Some people are clueless at what all it takes.
I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 24 so I can’t imagine coping with the disease as a kid. You are doing a great job supporting your daughter and teaching others about T1D.
Thank you! It is my goal to raise awareness for this disease. I hope one day soon there is a cure!
