Type 1 Diabetes: One Month Update

Hi, friends! Today I wanted to share an update on how Elizabeth is doing with her new diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes.

For those of you that don’t know, Liz was diagnosed with T1D on December 20, 2017. Read all about it here.

We are just a little over our one month mark with this disease.

Here is what we know:

Diabetes NEVER stops! It is something we think about constantly! Just when we think we are having a good sugar day, her sugar goes crazy and we have a rough day and there really is no reason why.

Carb counting is getting easier. At first, counting the carbs to everything she ate was very daunting. Now, I know all of her favorite foods by heart. It is still really hard when I make something homemade because I have to stop and count the carbs in everything. I have a big book I’m writing everything down in so once I make it I will then know how many carbs are in it the next time I make it.

People are not very knowledgeable about Type 1. I’ve had TONS of people asking me if she will grow out of it or tell me that if she just watches what she eats, her sugar will be better. That is the farthest thing from the truth! Liz needs insulin to live. Period. It’s my goal to raise awareness for this disease and help find a cure.

Diabetes is expensive! Insulin, Dexcom sensors, glucagon, low snacks, pumps, alcohol wipes, etc… BUT when I get mad at paying for something, I am in the same breath so thankful this stuff was created to help Liz live a healthy life.

Liz is an absolute ROCKSTAR! She is so amazing and makes me proud every single day. She doesn’t complain hardly ever and is already giving herself her own shots.

We had our one-month appointment last Wednesday. The doctors were really impressed with all her numbers and how she’s been handling everything.

When she was diagnosed her A1C level was 11.6%. Wednesday it was already down to 9.1% in a month time! This is very impressive.

I’m praying when we go back for our 3 month check up her A1C is down closer to the 7.5% where they want it.

Thank you all for the support during the last month! Elizabeth has a wonderful group of family and friends that love her fierce and I’m so thankful for that!
